I was an aide in a K-1 combo classroom, and it is amazing for building the maturity of the younger kids. In our school, since pre-K wasn't obligatory at the time, I'm not sure how students were selected, but I remember everyone HIGHLY benefiting from the setup. Of course, it helped that the teacher was unbelievably experienced, to the point where she even helped me create a lesson and lead it when she found out I was considering teaching as a career (even though I was more interested in high school). Mixed classes benefit kids because they have TWO whole years with the same teacher, so they feel like leaders when, at the beginning of the school year, they already know the norms and expectations of the space and love teaching the younger kids how to behave. Watching them grow was awesome. I don't have anything else to add because, yes, I did in fact become a high school teacher. But I will be teaching ELD 11 and ELD 12 in a combo class. I'm excited to see all the ideas in this video and comments from other teachers in similar classroom situations.

You explained this so thoroughly and beautifully!! Love the book shopping time built in! I do a center called Picture of the Week….i found some cool/interesting/funny pictures on Nat Geo Kids and just google images, laminated them, then velcroed them on a laminated poster paper where they have to write 4 different kinds of sentences to go with the picture (statement, question, command and exclamation). I think I could just make this in a writing notebook for a writing center!

Do you get paid more for teaching two grades at once? I've heard of this done decades ago at pilot schools, but not today

I taught multi level for 35 years, I have had 4-7 then 1-3 then k-2 then prek -6 . I would rather teach multi level then one grade level.

I went to school last week to see if my classroom was ready and found out that there was a summer camp in my class. I will not be able to go in before the last week before school starts so that will leave me with only 4 days to set up. I am stressed. Any suggestions? 21 years teaching and this has never happened to me before!

If you have time, you should do a short video on how you do your recess materials. I'm so interested because I want to take the leap and do the same, but I don't know where to start with containers, how do gamboards fit, etc. Love all your videos! Thanks for sharing with us!!
